The group began in the fall of 2000 with seven men: Dale Cowart,
Wes Henderson, Alan Wilkerson, Tim Martin, Devin Swindle, Dennis Tindall and Bruce Caldwell (pictured at right).
“I guess First Day had its genesis at a Men’s Retreat at Camp Galilee” Devin Swindle recalls. “The seven of us just gathered around a big oak tree and started singing hymns. We all grew up singing a cappella in church, so we picked out a part and just harmonized!”
The group ‘debuted’ at a Valentine banquet, and shortly thereafter sang at a teacher appreciation banquet at a local church; they began to receive requests to perform at other events in other areas. “It just kind of snowballed as we began to be invited to sing for more events.” says Tim Martin “ We all decided that God wanted us to use our talents for more than just entertainment and sing at more than just church functions as a ministry to those who may not know Christ.”
In August 2003, First Day teamed up with A Cappella recording artist “The Vocal Union” in Mountain Home for a concert benefiting the local Christian Clinic; the following month the group opened for contemporary Christian recording artist “Chosen Few” at the Baxter County Fair. Following this exposure, First Day was chosen as one of the “Showcase” musical groups at the 2004 Arkansas Fair Manager’s Association Convention in Hot Springs.
...changes...
In November 2003, bass-baritone singer Dennis Tindall resigned due to overwhelming commitments at home and work. After his departure, First Day decided to rearrange its harmonies for the new 6-man format.
In the fall of 2004, Devin Swindle moved to Searcy, Arkansas and Alan Wilkerson moved to Paragould; both continued to sing with First Day. “While it makes our practices a challenge, we still enjoy getting together and working on new material and sharpening up the old.” states Devin Swindle. “We are thankful for the Harrison St. Church of Christ in Batesville for providing us a central meeting place to practice.”
In April, 2005 First Day added First Tenor Matt Nunnally of Searcy, Arkansas, to replace Alan Wilkerson, who took a new job in the Nashville area. Matt brings experience and amazing talent to First Day, with his years of singing with Glorify Him and more recently, Acappella.
Kyle Jones joined First Day’s ministry mid year 2005. He wields unbelievable vocal talent, providing vocal percussion at some of First Day’s live events and studio recordings.
...more changes...
Over a span of three months from December ‘05 to February ‘06, two more founding members (cousins Dale Cowart and Wes Henderson) decided that family and work commitments had become too overwhelming to continue singing with First Day. “When I missed two of my son’s football games in one month, I knew I had to make a decision. It was an easy one”, Wes said, “Family always comes first. I love singing, and there’s nobody I’d rather sing with than my First Day brothers, but these boys of mine will be grown up and gone before I can blink!”
Jeff Henig joined First Day in August of 2006, replacing Dale Cowart; he is an incredibly talented bass singer, and rounds out the First Day family with his terrific talent and a wonderful heart!
...the reason...
All members of First Day have careers and families and sing for the pure enjoyment and the opportunity to proclaim Christ in song. “It is a challenge” says founding member Tim Martin, “to strike a balance; it is a calling and a ministry, and we feel led to use our God-given talent to reach those who do not know Jesus.”
All First Day members (past and present) remain close friends… Bruce and Dennis (and their boys) hunt and fish together; Dale, Bruce, and Dennis serve as deacons at their local church; Alan stays in touch via email; and Wes and Tim worship together at the Riverside church of Christ in Gassville…. “once you’re a part of the family, you are part of the family forever!”, Tim observed.
...looking ahead...
First Day continues to book as a 6-man vocal group, ministering to crowds from 25 to 10,000! “We don’t know what God has in store, but we feel blessed to be a vessel for His message!”
God Bless!
